Obviously, you’ll need to remove all the food before you move your fridge. If you planning on taking any of the fridge’s contents with you to your new house make sure you have enough freezer blocks ready by freezing them the day before.
Have someeskies ready to pack the perishable items that you want to take, and don’t forget to remove any ice or trays from the fridge that could cause damage during transport. To avoid wasting food you may want to plan ahead and eat as much of the perishable food as possible before the move. Try not to buy any unnecessary items close to moving day.
Turn Off Your Fridge
Before moving your fridge, you should turn it off to give the oils and fluids enough time to settle. Turning it off at least two hours before the removalists arrive will give it enough time to reduce the risk of damaging your fridge during transit.
If your freezer needs defrosting you’ll need to turn it off a day or so before the move to give the ice enough time to melt. On moving day wipe the freezer one last time to ensure that it’s dry and check for any trays left inside.
This may be the perfect opportunity to give your fridge a thorough clean. Once the fridge has been turned off it will begin to warm up. This can create bad odours if the fridge is dirty, so a good clean will ensure a fresh fridge when you arrive at your new house.
If your fridge has glass shelves take them out and wrap them separately. Many people forget to do this step. But not only will it make the fridge lighter,if glass shelves are left inside the fridge during transit they could crack or break. Wrapping them in bubble wrap or towels can ensure safe transport to their new home.
Secure the Fridge
To make the move easier coil up the power cord and tape it in a small bundle to avoid it getting caught or damaged during the move. Your removalist often takes care of packing materials, however if you have opted to do this yourself be sure to secure the fridge doors with a rope. Swinging doors can be dangerous and damage your fridge.
You may want to avoid using tape to secure your fridge as this cause leave marks or sticky residue behind. Fridges with double doors can have the handles tied together for extra security.
Turning the Fridge Back On
Once the move is done and your fridge is in place at the new house do not turn it on immediately, this could cause damage. Wait at least three hours to allow the oils to settle before turning it on. If it’s a very old fridge you may need to give it longer to settle.
Moving your fridge doesn’t have to be stressful if you plan ahead. Don’t forget to plan in advance for any perishable items that you will be taking. Have enough eskies on hand and don’t forget to freeze your ice bricks before moving day if you’re planning on transporting food. Remember to remove all shelves, ice and trays and secure the doors and cord before your movers arrive.
